Cranberry sauce is a favorite side dish for turkey, but the cranberry is also one of the best natural weapons against cystitis and urinary tract infections and is routinely recommended as a preventive by doctors. Ii is even cited in the official listing of drugs, the U.S. Pharmacopeia, as an effective remedy for these problems. It’s still debatable if the cranberry acidified urine kills the bacteria that cause the infection or just prevents the bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder, but there are few who doubt it’s efficacy.
Supplements are available as capsules. The recommended dosage is one capsule one to three times daily. Commercial cranberry juice cocktails are highly sweetened and processed and not recommended. Real cranberry juice is effective but extremely tart. You might find a cranberry-apple juice combination at a health-food store that would work, provided it doesn’t contain added sugar.
